ActOn - The disaster management initiative of the Human Care Foundation

The idea of a disaster management team in Kozhikode under the umbrella body of the Human Care Foundation was the dream project of K.M.Najeeb, the Secretary of the Human Care Foundation. Drawing inspiration from the camp he attended at Nepal in the wake of the 2015 earthquake with a fifteen member team under the HCF, he mooted the idea of a task force in a similar template here. On 3 June 2015, a reception to the Nepal team was organised in the presence of Mr N Prasanth IAS, District Collector, Kozhikode, to attract public response and garner support for the victims of the disaster.

The Disaster Management initiative was officially inaugurated on 25th October 2015 at Calicut, with an objective to educate and mitigate the loss of lives and property in natural and manmade disasters. The altruistic efforts of the organization found expression in the manifold initiatives it has espoused ever since.

• As part of the world disaster management day, a rally traversing the disaster prone area of Calicut District from 8 to 14 October 2015 extended the message of emergency life saving techniques by displaying posters and performing street plays.
• ActOn organized a meeting of Trade union leaders of Kozhikode and arranged a class on Disaster management to the headload workers, auto drivers etc who are, in most cases, the first line intervenors at a disaster site.
• Another notable achievement was a Seminar on Disaster Management for Medical Professionals organized in February 2016. The participants benefitted immensely from the valuable insights of Dr. Santhosh Kumar, Vice President,Doctors without Borders, Trivandrum, and Dr N M Mujeeb Rahman, Medical Superintendent, MES Medical College, Perintalmanna Malappuram.
• A fifteen member team visited and participated in rescue action during Chennai Flood at Kancheepuram in December 2015. ActOn distributed dress, food, utensils, blankets etc. in association with Women Development Trust, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tamilnadu. ActOn also provided support to repair the homes in Kancheepuram .
• The psychological support extended to the survivors of the Kollam Firework tragedy in Kerala in April 2016 was yet another flagship programme.

ActOn - Becoming An Independent Charitable Trust

The century’s worst floods lashed Kerala in September 2018. Recognizing the enormity of the task of rebuilding Kerala after the floods, ActOn decided to form an independent body exclusively for disaster management and rehabilitation under the aegis of the Human Care Foundation. The result is the ActOn Charitable Trust. The Trust registered in September 2018 with its Headquarters at Kuttippuram, Malappuram was inaugurated on 29th September 2018 when disaster-hit Kerala was seeking support from all over the world. ActOn called for volunteers to work for the flood victims and our call was answered in huge numbers. A 1500 member strong volunteer team was organised on the very first day of its inauguration. After a One day Workshop for volunteers conducted in association with the district administration (special thanks to Mr Amit Meena IAS, District Collector, Malappuram and Mr Pratheesh Kumar IPS, Superintendent of Police) the volunteers were deployed to various parts of Kerala.

ActOn decided to hold hands with District Administration for rebuilding the District. A scheme for rebuilding 300 totally damaged houses was devised. The Government has declared an aid of four lakhs to the families who lost their homes irrecoverably. Realising the insufficiency of the amount to build a home, ActOn decided to contribute an additional two lakhs to realise their dream of building a house. The needy families are identified in association with the District administration regardless of any vested interests. Today, as we complete a hundred days after the floods hit Kerala, the construction of the houses have already started and almost 32 houses are in different stages of completion, though government aid is still entangled in red tape.
A model village consisting of 22 homes for landless families living in ‘puramboku’ on the shores of the Bharathapuzha is on the anvil near Kuttippuram in an acre of land donated by a philanthropist. This ambitious model village aims to empower the families stripped off their homes and land by the flood. The village will have a skill development centre and recreational facilities.
All these activities are taken up with the support of kindhearted people who give us unconditional support.
